On 25 – 28 October 2022 the 16th General Conference of the International Association of Universities (IAU) was held at University College Dublin, Ireland. It brought together more than 300 representatives of 130 countries, including Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan, Oguz han Engineering and Technology University of Turkmenistan, International University of Oil and Gas named after Yagshygeldi Kakayev and International University of Humanities and Development, for reflection, debate and action on issues that occupy the world of higher education.

The Conference was dedicated to the theme: Relevance and Value of Universities to Future Society. It called upon the participants to reflect on universities’ function in society and their contribution to building a sustainable and inclusive future. It also raised the question in what ways universities need to change in a rapidly transforming world. Beyond the idea of change, it focused on what needs to be cherished and preserved to uphold the very idea of the university and its role in society.

Founded in 1950, under the auspices of UNESCO, the International Association of Universities (IAU) is an independent, non – government organization that recognizes the key role higher education plays in the overall process of achieving sustainable development. Now, it includes 611 organizations, i.e. 551 higher education institutions, 31 organizations, 19 companies and 10 associations. It believes that higher education institutions play an important role in the development of societies and encourages innovation, mutual learning among institutions and provides opportunities to build partnerships and networks among them worldwide as well as with various regional, national and international bodies.

Becoming a member of the IAU is a big step for Oguz han Engineering and Technology University of Turkmenistan in the short history of the young university, especially, considering that it has been recently included in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking – 2022. This serves as an evident example how actively the initiatives in education sphere of Turkmenistan put forward by Hero Arkadag in our country are being successfully implemented today by esteemed President Arkadagly Serdar, since, as noted by the National Leader of Turkmenistan, science and education are what the people accumulated for thousands of years and passed it down from generation to generation, this is our priceless heritage.
